Mathare United held hosts Ulinzi Stars to a barren draw in a Round 3 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) match played at the Afraha Stadium on Saturday.
Head coach Francis Kimanzi made one change to his first eleven with Daniel Mwaura being promoted to the starting line-up. The winger made his inclusion count with a weighted cross in the 9th minute that was met by a rocket header from Cliff Nyakeya that shot into the roof of the net beating a hapless Timothy Odhiambo. However the goal was controversially ruled out.
Moments later, Nyakeya turned provider picking out Mwaura’s run with a clever diagonal. Mwaura connected well with a neat first touch to skip past Odhiambo but his effort rolled narrowly off the right post.
Chances came at a premium thereafter before Nyakeya had another go at goal but his connection to Edward Seda’s cross was heroically blocked by Brian Birgen.
A cagey start from both sides dominated the opening quarter of the second half before Ulinzi Stars missed a glorious chance to go one up. Daniel Waweru swung a sumptuous delivery into the area from a corner that invited Robert Mboya off his line.
Masita Masuta connected with a solid header but George Owino cleared off the line. There was still danger as a goal mouth melee ensued before the ball broke for David Owino who cleared. Mwaura almost got the opener on the other end but his rasping drive from the edge of the box stung Odhiambo’s palms.
Chrispin Oduor also though he had found the breakthrough but his shot was blocked by Omar Mbongi after Francis Omondi had found him with a corner at the back post.
The lads pressed on for the winner late on but the hosts defended diligently. Oliver Rutto this time pulled an adroit interception to prevent Clifford Alwanga from connecting to Mwaura’s cross. Omondi tested Odhiambo with a 25 yard freekick but it was well gathered.
There was a late twist to the game after David Owino landed awkwardly from Cliff Kasuti’s challenge. Gilbert Osonga benefitted to make his debut for the club in stoppage time as we earned an away point.
The result sees us remain top of the log with 7 points.
