Cliff Nyakeya was the hero at the Thika Sub County Stadium as his goal ensured we maintained our unbeaten run by securing a one all draw against Thika United in a Round 5 league match played on Sunday.

The youngster rose high to connect to Clifford Alwanga’s cross and beat Allan Owiny with a looping header to cancel out Shami Kibwana’s 55th minute penalty.

Despite the pitch being slippery due to heavy rains in Thika, both sides got off to promising starts with Kibwana and Nyakeya coming close in the early exchanges. The best chance though fell on Chrispin Oduor in the tenth minute when David Owino played a short corner to Francis Omondi who picked out Oduor at the back post with a searching cross.

Dominant Thika

However Oduor could not keep his effort down and the chance was gone. The bright start paved way for a period of ascendancy from the hosts as the boys struggled to master the slippery surface. Baraka Badi should have crowned their dominance with a goal after a sweeping team move culminated in Kibwana setting him clean through on goal but his venomous drive whistled off target.

Thika United skipper Dennis Odhiambo thought he had produced the moment his side silently craved moments before the break but his pile driver was matched all the way by Robert Mboya who went full stretch to get his fingers on the ball.

Kibwana penalty

Nicholas Muyoti’s side piled more pressure at the restart and their reward finally arrived. Kibwana, a constant menace on the left, picked a return pass from Musa Saad and showed quick feet to escape the attention of Samuel Olwande.

Beaten, Olwande hacked him in the box and referee Nyabera Libese pointed to the spot. Kibwana picked himself up and showed great composure to put gloss on a superb display with a goal of his own.

Kibwana should have got his second of the day shortly afterwards but his drive stung Mboya’s arms for a corner that did not bear fruit.

Francis Kimanzi played his first card introducing Chris Ochieng’ for Daniel Mwaura yet the storm never abated. Badi, on his trademark overlaps down the right, found Clement Masakidi inside the six yard box. Masakidi shimmied past Johnstone Omurwa but his shot was disappointing as it flew over the bar.

On the other end, Allan Owiny timed his approach perfectly to come off his line and deny Clifford Alwanga who had been played clean through on goal by Edward Seda. The game pulsed back and forth in the balance as Mathare United pressed for an equalizer.

Kibwana turned provider in a quick counter attack teeing up Saad for a shot at the edge of the box the ball rolled narrowly off target with Mboya well beaten.

Nyakeya leveller

The Slum Boys did not give up as Kimanzi threw more men forward in attack. The equalizer came in unprecedented fashion. Alwanga, now playing out wide on the right, floated a teasing cross into the area and Nyakeya stooped above the Thika United defence to plant his header into the top right corner beyond Owiny’s despairing drive.

With ten minutes left on the clock, Nyakeya was replaced by Ronald Reagan as Kimanzi looked to run down the clock content with a point on a day when the poor playing surface completely ruined his game plan.
