Mathare United 1-1 Vihiga United

The lads failed to make their dominance count as they settled for a 1-1 draw with Vihiga United at the Camp Toyoyo on Saturday.

Ahmed Ahmad opened the scoring in the 6th minute with a sweet strike from close range before Clifford Alwanga saw his penalty saved by Barnabas Tiema moments later to hand the visitors a lifeline.

Dennis Wafula levelled the scores shortly after the break to hand his side a share of the spoils.

John Mwangi should have found the breakthrough inside the opening five minutes but he took a heavy first touch after Alwanga had set him clean through with a nudged pass off his chest.

Ahmed's opener

However Ahmed made no mistake after being fed by Alwanga in a sweeping team move. The youngster burst into the box where he fired into the roof of the net past a hapless Tiema.

Missed penalty

Even before the visitors could stomach their early setback, they almost fell further behind when their skipper Bernard Ochieng’ conceded a penalty after handling in the area while attempting to clear Mike Simiyu’s cross.

Club top scorer Alwanga stepped forward to take the spot kick in the absence of dead ball specialist Francis Omondi who was on the bench. He watched in dismay as Tiema sprung to his left to parry his effort and deny him his 11th goal of the season.

Mboya double save

That save brought some life to Edward Manoah’s charges and they had their first real chance on the other end. Morven Otinya made light work of Simiyu on the right before finding Charles Okwemba with a cutback. The veteran midfielder picked his spot bottom left but Robert Mboya saved.

The rebound fell kindly for Otinya but Mboya emerged tops once again to deny him at the near post.

Edward Seda was unlucky not to get on the score sheet after his header from close range squirmed over the bar as the hosts continued to dominate the early exchanges. Mwangi, a constant menace on the left, glided past five blue shirts before feeding Cliff Nyakeya whose curler missed the target narrowly.

Simiyu tested Tiema with a free kick from the left but the custodian got his finger tips to the ball with Alwanga lurking behind him.

Alwanga should have made amends for his penalty miss at the restart but he contrived to head straight at Tiema after Mwangi picked him out with a well weighted cross from the right.

Vihiga draw level

Five minutes later, a howler from Mboya gifted Vihiga the equalizer. Victor Ademba sent an innocuous looking ball from deep in his half. Dennis Wafula beat Samuel Olwande and Johnstone Omurwa to the ball and with Mboya well off his line, the ball rolled into the empty net.

Manoah made his first change summoning the speedy Michael Misigo in place of the jaded Otinya. His opposite number Salim Ali, holding brief for Francis Kimanzi, withdrew Roy Okal for Chrispin Oduor to beef up his attack yet there was no respite.

No respite

Chris Masinza saw his rasping drive come off the side netting before Ahmed missed a late chance to secure a win for his side. He connected to Mwangi’s cross with a solid header at the back post but it went narrowly wide.

The draw leaves us at second place with 33 points albeit temporarily pending other Round 20 results.
