Situma itching to deliver first win as captain

Mathare United defender James Situma leads the team out of the dugout in his first match as captain against Western Stima at Kasarani Stadium on Saturday, March 9, 2019.

James Situma is eager to guide Mathare United to victory against Kakamega Homeboyz on Sunday in only his second match as skipper.

Situma, who joined the club in June 2018 from Homeboyz, wore the armband in the last outing against Western Stima in the absence of team captain Chrispin Oduor who is still sidelined with a back problem.

While his first game as skipper ended in a barren draw, Situma is optimistic the trip to Kakamega will yield maximum points with the right approach.

“It’s always an honour to be picked as captain since the band comes with a lot of responsibility. We played well against Stima but we were just unlucky. There were a lot of positives from that game and if we build on that performance then we can certainly get a good result in Kakamega,” offered Situma.

This will also be the first time Situma will be playing against Homeboyz at Bukhungu since leaving last year. He insists that a lot has changed in  the last nine months.

“They have a new coach (Nicholas Muyoti) who likes playing attractive football and that is our culture here at Mathare United. That makes it an interesting match but it will be a great feeling to get my first win as captain against my former team,” added Situma amid a grin.

Situma will most likely come up against Moses Mudavadi or Luke Namanda on the flanks as he looks to pick a third consecutive win against Homeboyz since crossing over.

He has played the full 90 minutes in previous triumphs against Homeboyz at Machakos (2-0) last season and at Kasarani (3-2) this season.
