Roma over the moon after opening goal account

Mathare United defender Andrew Juma (right) celebrates with teammates after scoring against Nzoia Sugar during their SportPesa Premier League (SPL) match at Bukhungu Stadium on Saturday, December 15, 2018.

Andrew “Roma” Juma is a blend of relief, joy and optimism.

After spending the whole of last term on the sidelines, the youngster has played the entire 90 minutes of the first two league matches this season.

Juma has brought a calming effect at the back with his vision and timely interceptions complementing the tough-tackling Johnstone Omurwa at the heart of defence.

“It feels great to be back after almost a year. That was the most challenging period in my football career but I never gave up. I kept working hard in training and my teammates also encouraged me a lot.  I thank God that this season I’ve started well,” said Juma.

He put gloss on an solid performance against Nzoia Sugar with his first goal for the club; sneaking at the back post unmarked to connect to Kevin Kimani’s in-swinger from a freekick with an assured header.

“Scoring my first goal in only the second match of the season is a very important milestone. It’s a big motivation and I know I can do much better,” added the academy graduate.

Having kept two clean sheets so far, Juma is eyeing more success as his partnership with Omurwa continues to blossom.

“We have a good understanding with Omurwa and (James) Situma also plays a big role in guiding us. We have done well so far and we want to keep as many clean sheets as possible.

“It’s important that we do a good job at the back because we have a good attack. I want to help the team win the title this season,” offered Juma.
