Opiyo backs Kasaya for clean sheet against Homeboyz
Levis Opiyo has expressed confidence in his counterpart Wycliffe Kasaya ahead of the Round 17 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) match against Kakamega Homeboyz slated for Saturday 29 August at the Mumias Complex.
Opiyo, who has emerged as the first choice custodian after joining the team in January 2017, is suspended for this encounter after being sent off in the last outing against Sony Sugar for a late tackle on Yema Mwana.
“Yema is a very speedy striker and in that situation he had already beaten Wise (George Owino) for pace. I had to take a risk for the team so I decided to come off my line and go for the ball or the player. I really had no option but to do it for the team,” recalled Opiyo.
In his absence Kasaya, who has only started three matches this season, is expected to start in between the sticks ahead of the youthful Mark Kioko. However Opiyo believes that with the experience of skipper George Wise Owino at the back, Kasaya has what it takes to keep a clean sheet.
“Since Wise started playing at the back we have done well defensively because he provides leadership to the young players. We have also added the experience of Samuel Olwande and this has made it easy for us to defend.
“I don’t think there is any cause of alarm because our department has three good goalkeepers. Everybody is ready to play and give his best to help the team perform. I wish Kasaya all the best because if he does well the whole team will benefit,” added Opiyo who has kept seven clean sheets this season.
