Goals Galore As Mathare Claw Sofapaka

Edward Seda (right) celebrates his goal with Daniel Mwaura in the 3-1 win over Sofapaka in the Round 4 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) match played at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Sunday, February 25, 2018.

The lads turned in a fantastic display to maintain top spot on the league standings with an emphatic 3-1 win over Sofapaka at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Sunday.

Francis Omondi set the tone for the deserved victory with his 19th minute opener from the spot after Edward Seda was brought down in the box by Rodgers Aloro. Chrispin Oduor doubled our lead shortly afterwards with what is a likely contender for goal of the season with an adventurous effort from the midline that beat Matthias Kigonya all the way.

Kigonya halved the deficit for the visitors just before the break with a neat penalty kick after Johnstone Omurwa was adjudged to have handled in the box. With the tie still open, Seda put the result beyond doubt with an accomplished finish moments after the hour mark.

The visitors, who were the favorites on paper having signed big names in the January transfer window, started strongly pinning us into our own half for the opening quarter before we broke the deadlock against the run of play.

Omondi penalty

Seda pounced on a loose ball at the edge of the Sofapaka box, took a deft touch to escape the attention of Aloro who stretched his foot to foul him leaving referee Peter Waweru with only one option; to award the penalty.

Omondi sauntered to the spot and showed calm nerves to get his second goal of the campaign and hand us the advantage. Even before the reality of that setback had settled on the Sofapaka bench, Chrsipin Oduor doubled our lead.

Oduor wonder goal

A well-organized pressing regime forced Kigonya to clear the ball while way off his line and Oduor took the chance to hit the ball first time from the midline and it flew into the net to set the stands on fire.

Trailing by two goals down, Sam Ssimbwa rallied hi charges and Umaru Kasumba almost gave them a lifeline but he sent his free header awfully off target after Willis Ouma has picked him out with a dipping cross.

Their pressure finally bore fruit with Omurwa penalized for a handball in the box. Kigonya made no mistake from the spot to give his side a ray of hope heading to the break.

Ssimbwa sent Kepha Aswani into the fray at the restart and rested Ezekiel Okare. By this time, the hosts were cruising and Cliff Nyakeya was unlucky not to get his name on the score sheet. He played a quick give and go with Clifford Alwanga at the edge of the box.

He stepped into the box and fired a low drive that cannoned off the upright with Kigonya well beaten. The rebound fell kindly for him but the Ugandan had recovered to gather cleanly. Ssimbwa sought more attacking verve from the pair of Kevin Kimani and Mohammed Kilume yet the storm never abated.

Seda on target

Seda, benefitting from a clever dink from Samuel Olwande, beat Aloro with another touch of class before finding the bottom corner with a powerful side footed finish.

The pattern of the early exchanges resumed with Kimani proving to be a menace on the right. His first touch saw his intended cross crash on the side netting before he forced Robert Mboya to a finger-tip save with a curler from a freekick. Mboya once again showed great reflexes to go full stretch to his left to keep out a teasing shot from Maurice Odipo.

Birlliant saves

Kigonya planted some respect on the score line denying Nyakeya with a double save before reading his intentions cleverly when he attempted to lob him in a separate attempt. The introduction of Roy Okal, Ronald Reagan and Chris Ochieng’ galvanized our defence as we held on to remain top of the table with 10 points.
