Alwanga header secures first win
Clifford Alwanga secured all three points for Mathare United with an 89th minute header at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos that sealed the team’s first win of the season in a 2-1 victory over Ulinzi Stars on Saturday.
The boys looked destined for a third conseuctive draw after Daniel Waweru had cancelled out David Owino's header in the 74th minute with a brilliant freekick, but a moment of patience with a minute remaining in normal time saw Mathare snatch the win which temporarily lifts the team to top of the standings with five points.
Alwanga finished off the game as he had started. He produced the team’s first attempts at goal inside the opening five minutes with two crisp headers, one pulling a save out of Timothy Odhiambo in the Ulinzi goal and the other sailing just inches over.
Head coach Salim Ali kept faith with the same starting XI for the second game running and the boys did not disappoint, coming close to scoring with almost every attacking foray.
Kevin Kimani, Captain for the last two matches, pulled the strings in midfield and was a constant menace for Ulinzi from set-peices.
With the first win of the season now in the bag, the lads now set their sights to next weekend where a familiar foe in Kariobangi Sharks lie in wait in the season’s first installment of the Slum Derby.
