Alwanga: Gor Mahia matches are always special
The lads will face off against Gor Mahia on Wednesday in a rescheduled round 7 KPL tie to be played at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos and ahead of the game, Clifford Alwanga has shared his insights on what to expect from a fixture he knows all too well.
Alwanga is one of the more senior players in Salim Ali’s squad and has faced-off against Gor not only as a Slumboy but in his previous workstations at KCB and Tusker.
“Matches against Gor are always a spectacle. The atmosphere on matchdays is like no other. The fans and players make it a special encounter and as a player you do not need any extra motivation for a match like this,” the burly forward said.
Both teams come into tomorrow’s 3PM kickoff off of the back of disappointing results in their previous outings and will be eager for a positive outcome.
Gor were dumped out of the Confederations Cup over the weekend while Mathare dropped more points in the league as a result of a 0-0 draw against Posta Rangers and Alwanga sees both outcomes as extra incentive towards securing a win on Wednesday.
“We know what we have to do and have prepared well. The fact that we drew against Rangers did not sit well with us and we need to respond and what better way than doing so with a win against Gor.
“They also have the disappointment of having been dumped out of the continental scene and this could work in our favour,” he opined.
Salim’s charges have for the last six outings gone unbeaten against Gor with two wins and six draws. A win could send the side up to 4th on the log with 14 points, two adrift of top spot.
